Blue Flag
The Blue Flag is the internationally recognised worldwide award given to seaside resorts as a certification of environmental quality and sustainable land management. Established in 1987, this Eco-label is awarded annually in 49 countries, initially only in Europe, but more recently also outside Europe. The Blue Flag Programme is conducted by the non-governmental, non-profit organisation “Foundation for Environmental Education” (FEE) with the support and participation of the two UN agencies: UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and UNWTO (World Tourism Organisation).
Castiglione della Pescaia has been Blue Flag for 23 years, every year it receives this prestigious award for the quality of its beaches and sea.
cinque vele
LEGAMBIENTE - Italian Touring Club
Le Vele di Legambiente are a symbol testifying not only to the purity of the water but generally to the quality of the environment and services offered. The banner has been awarded for over twenty years to the most deserving municipalities through data collected by Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club.
In 2022, Castiglione della Pescaia is again at the top of the “Most beautiful seaside” guide and the 5 Vele 2022 ranking by Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club, occupying third place on this important podium.
Plastic free
Disposable? NO THANKS!
As of 1 January 2019, the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia has definitively said goodbye to single-use plastic. One of the first Municipalities in Italy to join the national campaign and issue an order to ban the distribution of single-use plastic material throughout the municipality. An important initiative that has transformed Castiglione and the Maremma into a #plasticfree area increasingly at the forefront of environmental sustainability.
Spighe verdi
Spighe Verdi is the national award given by FEE Italy (Foundation for Environmental Education) to Italian localities that promote sustainable rural development, environmental care and landscape protection. It has also been called the rural counterpoint to the Blue Flag, a European award given by the FEE for beaches and marinas.
In 2022, Castiglione della Pescaia was confirmed as one of Italy’s Spighe Verdi municipalities for the fourth consecutive year.
Lilac flag - accessibility
The “Lilac Flag” project was created in 2012 with the aim of encouraging tourism by people with disabilities, rewarding and supporting those municipalities that pay special attention to this target group.
Castiglione della Pescaia was also considered an accessible municipality in 2020-2022, exceeding the standard required to obtain the lilac banner thanks to continuous improvement actions aimed at offering an increasingly accessible region.
FIAB yellow flag - sustainable mobility
The Yellow Flag is the Bicycle Friendly Municipality award promoted by FIAB, which certifies the degree of bicycle friendliness of Italian municipalities in order to reward locations that have implemented bike-friendly initiatives and therefore identify the most bicycle-friendly locations.
Green flag - Italian pediatricians
The green flag indicates a location with child-friendly beaches and therefore rewards Italian seaside resorts that have the best characteristics for seaside holidays with children and families. The Green Flags have been awarded since 2008 on the basis of a survey devised with the contribution of 2,860 Italian and foreign paediatricians who collaborated free of charge, and the monitoring of seaside resorts reserved for children has expanded and grown from year to year.
Cetacean sanctuary - Pelagos
In 2013, the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia signed the Partnership Charter and received the Cetacean Sanctuary flag.
Established in Italy by the Ministry of the Environment and Territory Protection under the name of Marine Mammal Sanctuary and known in France as the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Cetacean Sanctuary is a marine protected area in France, Monaco and Italy, classified as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Interest. The great wealth of marine species, in particular cetaceans, and the typical nature of the habitat in which much of the territory of the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia is located, allowed it to become part of an agreement between France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco.
G20s - Italian beaches

Castiglione della Pescaia is part of this national network whose objective is to support the main seaside destinations to better define the future of the Italian coastline.
