Aragonese Castle

A beautiful balcony overlooking the sea, suspended in time

Castiglione della Pescaia Castle or Fortress is located on the top of the hill overlooking the sea, in the highest part of the medieval historic centre, still surrounded by splendid walls.
Thanks to its elevated position, the castle offers a wonderful panoramic view of the landscape below, including a large stretch of the Maremma coast.

Privately owned, with an internal courtyard, it consists of three towers with scarped bases arranged to form a triangle. The oldest core is represented by the Pisan Tower to the east, with a square stone base, which was later connected to the other two by means of a curtain wall.

The defensive walls were subsequently built around the town, reinforced with small and large towers, and they still preserve the general layout of the Aragonese era.

The D’Aragona were succeeded over time by some of the most important historical families in the area, such as the Piccolomini and the Lorena, until the advent of the Kingdom of Italy, when the castle, became state property and was left abandoned.

The building is now privately owned and, therefore, difficult to visit. Nevertheless, it is well worth visiting the imposing external structure and then proceeding along the alleyways of the old village to admire the views and some historical buildings, including:

  • The Urbica Gate, rebuilt in 1608, which leads to the charming medieval village
  • The Church of the Madonna del Giglio and the Clock Tower.
  • Palazzo Centurioni, a historic building of Renaissance origin, restored in recent years.
